When considering your home decorating options it is often all too easy to go with seemingly safe and relatively neutral choices with the view that you can then add some pieces of décor and accessories to personalise the space and “make it your own”. This is certainly one way that many choose to approach the decorating and re-decorating process, but what if you dared to tackle it with a little less caution and safety and more of a sense of experimentation and confidence?

What if by choosing to be safe and neutral you have already kicked things off by doing exactly the opposite of “making it your own”? Here are some ideas to help you approach your next decorating project with a bit more dare!

Have a game plan

Whether you are decorating a new space, or re-decorating an existing one, picture the space as a blank canvas. There is no rule book. You can fill it with any colours, textures and items that reflect your personality and taste. Be sure to consider the thoughts of other members of the house who will be using the space too. You want it to work functionally and design-wise for everyone. Having a game plan will help you to be clear about what you ultimately want to work towards and guide your decisions when choosing how to decorate the space.

Make bold choices

Perhaps the essence of decorating with dare, is to make bold choices. As we have said, there is no rule book. By all means be inspired by current trends and traditional design styles, but don’t worry about whether you are necessarily making on-trend or text-book style choices. The most amazing decorating and design projects, no matter how big or small, come from those who have a game plan, make bold choices and stop at nothing to realise their vision.

We don’t all dare the same

Decorating with dare and making bold choices can certainly mean bright accents and experimenting with contrasting textures and colours, but it doesn’t have to be. Whilst metallic decor and colourful wallpaper might be the dream space for some, intricate mosaic tiles and matte finish fittings might just be the heart’s desire for others. Don’t take it too seriously. Be confident, make the choices that you want to make and decorate your space with things that you love and want to have in there.

Choose what you love

If you have always wanted to paint your kitchen bench pink or your bedroom walls black, then do it. Fallen head-over-heels in love with a red leather couch? Then buy it. The thing to remember is that these bold choices that you love will only be a success if you really, truly love them. Just kind of liking it, or thinking that you should probably like it because it’s in all the design magazines right now, is not a good enough reason to commit to that bold choice. So long as these decisions form part of your overall game plan then you are on the right track to see the rest of the space come together and complement those much loved choices.
